Abstract

Abstract This chapter discusses the work of Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa (FTTSA), a non-profit initiative that has developed a primarily social certification programme based on fair trade principles and practices. The programme recognizes and supports tourism establishments in South Africa that operate fairly and contribute to the country's socioeconomic transformation objectives. The chapter draws in part on research into the perceived benefits and likely impacts of FTTSA certification. It concludes by considering how FTTSA could inform other tourism certification programmes in other destinations.
