Abstract

Associations had become the first step in the West’s acquaintance with Russian cities, architecture, painting and other artistic values. The article is the first attempt to trace and explain the process of foreigners’ cognition of Russian culture. Drawing analogies to the evaluation of the object was a step towards the analysis of the art form. It was carried out at the level of everyday associations and proceeded from the stereotypes that existed in Europe and the subjective impressions of specific travelers. The range of comparisons included sizes, shapes, materials, methods of their processing, historical and specific oppositions.
