Abstract
The growth of the geomagnetic DP and DR fields is compared with the corresponding interplanetary N-S component Bz variations. It is found that there is a quantitative difference between substorms with Bz > 0 and those with Bz 0 or Bz < 0 may arise from either the true difference in the energy injected into the ring current belt or the difference in distance where the ring current protons are injected.
