Abstract

Diabetes is a disease that affects millions of Indians every year. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is thought to be a multifactorial disease and both genetic and acquired factors contribute to its pathogenesis. Identification of the susceptibility genes for type 2 diabetes mellitus thus may lead to primary prevention of the disease. In most patients, type 2 diabetes mellitus results from genetic changes, each has a partial and additive effect. The inheritance pattern is thus complex, and environmental factors play an important role in favoring or delaying the expression of the disease.
