Abstract

Four varieties of bermudagrass, ‘Tifdwarf,’ ‘Tifway,’ ‘Floraturf’ (FB-137) and ‘Common’ (local sprigs), were evaluated for their response to changes in light quality. Wave lengths between 600-675 mµ were filtered out in one chamber whereas those less than 575 mµ were filtered out in the other. With the exception of Common, performance of the varieties was better under the shorter wave lengths. Floraturf produced the best cover and color under both light conditions. The response of Tifway and Tifdwarf was intermediate and neither variety exhibited as much tolerance to change in light quality as Floraturf. Tifdwarf exhibited slightly more tolerance than Tifway, Common bermudagrass was inferior in all treatments. Light conditions and performance of turf were also compared to those for a typical shade under post oak trees. The response of the grass was similar for relative light quality with better quality turf being obtained under the conditions of shorter light wave lengths.
