Abstract

The assessment of the sustainability of vegetable production under Fadama based on the value of the Sustainability Index (Z0 = 422) imply that the system falls far short of the criteria for sustainability (Z0 or Z1 = 0), indicating that the present system of producing vegetables under Fadama is not sustainable. Optimizing the present system using Goal Programming, led to improvements in the sustainability of the system (Z1 = 146).The improvements occurred through a reduction in land use intensity.
