Abstract

Effectiveness of the implementation of water protection measures at the regional level, including regulation of the polluted sewage discharges and increase in the degree of its purification, is most notably determined by the accurateness of the assessment of the level of impact of water pollution sources on the water quality and the ecological situation in the studied water area. This paper offers a methodological approach to assessing the impact of coastal sources of sewage discharge on the state of water bodies, taking into account the characteristics and conditions of discharge, the composition of sewage, as well as the degree of its purification and the load on the water body. Illustrated by the housing and utilities enterprises of the Mykolaiv region, point sources of water pollution have been ranked by these indicators. The classes of hazard of these sources are determined and the level of their environmental hazard is assessed. The obtained results can be used in development of a strategy for the surface water quality control in the river basin, including regulation of sewage discharges by coastal sources of pollution. They can also be applied when developing recommendations for improvement of the ecological situation in the area being studied.
