Abstract

Outside of their role in a patient’s own reproductive journey, human embryos and gametes hold potential as vehicles for research on the pathogenesis of developmental and genetic diseases as well as their treatment. Excess embryos are often generated during reproductive treatment but often remain in perpetual storage or are discarded due to difficulties associated with donation to research or to other patients. The Regenerative medicine through the Ethical procurement of Nonviable or Excess cellular Waste (RENEW) biobank accepts embryos from every state that permits human embryo research regardless of genetic testing results and disease carrier status.
