Abstract

The gross appearance and histology of the buccal mucosa adjacent to different metallic restoratives, to intact teeth and to complete dentures were studied to assess the nature of the tissue changes possibly attributable to dental materials. The results showed thickening of epithelium, increased epithelial vacuolization and parakeratinization, increased inflammation and decreased levels of mast cells in patients with subjective symptoms resembling galvanic pain, extensive restorative treatment, and complete dentures when compared with controls. The results are discussed in terms of epithelial cell proliferation, keratinization and the mechanical irritation due to altered surface configuration of restored teeth.
