Abstract
Industrial enterprises, manufacturing new and upgraded goods, are one of the most essential sectors of the country's economy that ensure its stable development. Both at the federal and regional level an important role is assigned to stimulating innovative activities of enterprises. The North Caucasus Federal District has a high economic potential, it is rich in unique natural resources. Before introducing certain measures to incentivize innovation, there should be a general assessment of the innovative potential of industrial enterprises to determine efficacy of realized investments. The purpose of this research is practical application of means of assessing the innovative potential of the regional economy, which will further enable to take measures to improve funds efficiency invested in the innovative development of industrial enterprises in the North Caucasus Federal District. The research methodology is based on a theoretical analysis of the main scientific provisions of the investment activity of the enterprise, a comparative analysis of the innovative potential of regional associations of Russia, as well as large industrial enterprises of the North Caucasus Federal District. The informational and empirical basis of the study was received from statistical data on the Russian Federation, as well as reporting of enterprises available in the public domain. The object of observation was the largest industrial enterprises of the NCFD with different development strategies over the period 2020–2021. The scientific novelty lies in the author's approach to assessing the innovation and investment potential of industrial enterprises: interpreting the concept of innovation and innovation strategy, as well as socio-economic significance of industrial enterprises within the national economy. The conducted research revealed a number of issues that hinder development of the innovative potential of industrial enterprises in the North Caucasus Federal District; it also proved relevance of the proposed diagnostics.
