Abstract

Techniques used to assess coastal process evolution over a temporal range of up to 100 years are presented for application in strategic regional studies in the UK. Coastal flood and erosion risk assessment methods are evaluated, for use in the development of long term Shoreline Management Plans. Applications are described for sites on the south coast of England that identify both flood and erosion risks to communities, over a period of 100 years. Extensive use of data from a regional coastal monitoring programme is used to support development of the coastal evolution and risk assessment techniques. A range of technical difficulties and limitations of the approaches are highlighted.
