Abstract

Negation, especially the position of nicht in the midfield, is one of the main difficulties for Italian German-students. Besides the better-known basic differences of syntax regarding the pro-drop phenomenon, the (S)VO or SOV-structure of sentences and the (im)possibility of doubled negation, students have to face a complex system of sintactic (and semantic) rules and restrictions. The analysis of a larger number of sentences including an erroneous position of nicht, produced by Italian university students, evidences some specific problems and might contribute to improve German-teaching, not only in Italy.
