Abstract

The genetic system of Aspergillus nidulans, an ascomycete fungus (Kingdom: Fungi; Phylum: Ascomycota; Class: Eurotiomycetes; Order: Eurotiales; Family: Aspergillaceae), has been used extensively for studying important biological phenomena including, but not limited to, genetic mechanisms, metabolic and pH regulation, development, differentiation, mitosis and the cytoskeleton, cell cycle control, hyphal tip growth, and primary and secondary metabolism. A. nidulans was previously also known as Emericella nidulans, due to peculiarities of fungal taxonomic nomenclature. A. nidulans has biological properties that have permitted development of experimental techniques for manipulating its genome to provide insightful experimental results. These properties include a haploid genome of modest size, a sexual (meiotic) reproductive cycle, an asexual (mitotic) reproductive cycle, a parasexual cycle with stable diploids and haploidization, simple nutritional requirements, rapid growth and reproduction, small size, multicellularity, and readily observable, informative phenotypes. Efficient gene-targeting and transformation systems have been developed for A. nidulans and its genome has been sequenced and annotated.
