Abstract

A new species in the Aspergillus nidulans group is described and compared to related taxa. Aspergillus navahoensis, from arid lands belonging to the Navajo Tribe in northern Arizona, resembles A. recurvatus and A. fruticulosus in having crystal-encrusted hyphae and basally curved or coiled conidiophores, but differs in dimensions of the conidium-bearing structures and in characteristics of the cleistothecial stage. The revised and expanded synoptic key to 34 taxa (29 species) uses readily observable features as an aid to identification and comparison of taxa.
