Abstract

Protoplast fusion techniques described in fungi (1,2) proved to be a valuable method for interspecific hybridization in previous experiments (3,4). Fusion of A. nidulans and A. rugulosus gave heterokaryons which might lead to stable “hybrid” /allodiploid/ formation following nuclear fusion. The finding that vegetative incompatible A. nidulans strains showed a similar pattern of hybridization following protoplast fusion has allowed the investigation of the genetical background of incompatibility system (5,6).
