Abstract

SUMMARY One may wonder why such a small number of plays has been written in any given Bantu language. The reason lies in the fact that drama is indeed a difficult verbal form of art to create because each principle of structure must be dramatic. In many studies, some of them recent, al I manner of traditional activities is seen as traditional drama. This is refuted; the following definition and character i sties of drama is rather suggested to tipify any play: A play is a fictional unity of structural principles that come about by way of the vertical or horizontal1) ordering of dramatic dialogue interactions. The primary building block of a play is a dramatic sentence termed a content. In a play a character delivers one or more dialogue contents—this is called a dialogue action.
