Abstract
Multimedia technology is changing our way of communication with the world using computers, trying to make communication very similar to that of human beings, that is, using our five senses. With the aim of contributing to the improvement of the transmission of multimedia data in networks, a project is being developed at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina involving transmission of video and audio signals in a FDDI (fiber distributed data interface) network. It is composed of a study on multimedia networks, the MPEG (Motion Picture Experts Group) standard, the software developed to improve the interface with the user during the creation, visualization, transmission and reception of video and audio signals, the architecture of the FDDI network and the management environment that was created to analyse the behaviour of the FDDI optical ring when transmitting video and audio signals.
