Abstract

Naval Engineers JournalVolume 106, Issue 4 p. 55-57 ASNE Luncheon Address Benjamin H. Alexander Ph.D., Benjamin H. Alexander Ph.D. Benjamin H. Alexander: , chief administrative officer of Drew Dawn Enterprises, Inc., served as Deputy Assistant Secretary, Department of Education from 1983–84 and was president of the University of the District of Columbia in 1982. He served for eight years as president of Chicago State University and accepted the presidency of the Chicago Institution of Higher Education in 1974 after having completed a twenty-year career as a research chemist and top-level administrator with the federal government. Dr. Alexander's professional experience includes service with the U.S. Department of Agriculture; Walter Reed Army Institute of Research; the National Institute of Health and the National Center for Health Services Research and Development. He lectured in organic chemistry at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Graduate School and served for 14 years as an adjunct professor in the Chemistry Department of American University. Born in Roberta, Ga., he grew up in Ohio and attended public schools in Cincinnati. He earned a B.A. in chemistry at the University of Cincinnati. His M.A. in chemistry was earned at Bradley University in Peoria, II., and in 1957 he earned a Ph.D. in chemisty from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. (finishing first in his class). Dr. Alexander has published more than 45 research papers in chemical and related journals, written over 160 articles for general publications and newspapers and co-owns four patents assigned to the U.S. Government. He is a fellow of the Academy of Science in Washington and an Academy Member of the Washington Joint Board on Science Education in Washington. Dr. Alexander serves on numerous directorships and trusteeships including the D.C.
