Abstract

ASLO is making another appearance in Santa Fe for the 2016 Summer Meeting! Join us from 5 June to 10 June at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center and the Eldorado Hotel. As we prepare for our return to Santa Fe, we reflect on what makes “The City Different” so appealing. Santa Fe is a distinctive city deriving its allure from combinations of food, culture, and history. Outside of Santa Fe's charm, it is the perfect location for a meeting of aquatic scientists: Santa Fe has taken water conservation seriously and strives to sustain its natural water resources. The city and its residents practice water conservation and drought management through a series of incentives and public education events. Much like the rich history and ethos surrounding Santa Fe's roots, water conservation has become a part of the Santa Fe culture. As ASLO attendees gather for the 2016 summer meeting, we are sure to be met with enthusiasm as we discuss our own environmental endeavors. The ASLO 2016 Summer Meeting will bring together freshwater, estuarine, and marine scientists, educators, policy makers, and students to meet and learn from each other about the many issues that face aquatic scientists today. Major thematic topics in limnology and oceanography will be covered, including biogeochemistry, biodiversity, invasive species, and ecosystem stressors. Special sessions will include contributions from different aquatic habitat types as well as sessions with varied interdisciplinary perspectives. We encourage you to attend the many topics being presented by your peers and learn what they have discovered. Plenary session speakers include: Emily Stanley (University of Wisconsin-Madison), Bob Hall (University of Wyoming), Sinead Collins (University of Edinburgh), Sebastian Diehl (Umeå University), and Paul del Giorgio (University of Quebec at Montreal). The ASLO organizing committee wants to capture some of Santa Fe's magic while attendees are at the 2016 summer meeting. The committee is working with the city of Santa Fe to present a public lecture by Peter McBride, renowned photographer, writer, and filmmaker whose passions include river conservation and watershed-related environmental issues. They are also organizing workshops, field trips, cultural experiences, a tapas and dance night, as well as local art exhibitions that will be characteristic of the city and this unique region. Also in the works are offerings of group runs and morning yoga classes! A special part of this meeting will be a Friday night closing party, with special guest bartenders, to say adiós to everyone before we go our separate ways. The 2016 Summer Meeting in Santa Fe will be a celebration of what we strive to achieve in understanding and exploration of our changing environment. Join us for an exciting time of reflection, discovery, and discussion.
