Abstract
AbstractShort-term ventricular assist devices are used in patients suffering a potentially reversible ventricular dysfunction. Any cause of cardiogenic shock can be a potential indication for mechanical support, although higher benefits are to be expected in potentially reversible causes such as acute myocarditis, drug overdose, hypothermia, and ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation. the main indications for ventricular assist support are: 1) severe and reversible ventricular failure therefore assuring temporary circulatory support until recovery or revascularization; 2) patients with large ischemic areas at risk, providing temporary circulatory support during high-risk percutaneous or surgical revascularization, and 3) bridging therapy towards a permanent assist device or heart transplantation.
