Abstract
This text deals with some perceptions of foreign travelers Spix and Martius about the nature of Maranhao. It starts with the premise that Romanticism served as the backdrop for the development of their perceptions, albeit indirectly, because they were naturalists, affiliated to the precepts of scientific illustration. As institutional task performed research on the flora, fauna, culture, and economics, among other elements of the region. Among the indirect results, perhaps unconscious, contributed to the development of a particular image of Brazil, and especially Maranhao, with emphasis on a strong and beautiful nature, even if weak and culturally hostage of support Europe. The impressions of romantic nature, produced by these travelers survive in time and space, echoing in some way, even today.
