Abstract

The article deals with the artistic tools of the book “The Princess Bride” (1973) by W. Goldman (1931–2018). This work is a postmodern metatext, a “book within a book”, if we take into account the author’s prefaces – “a book within a book within a book within a book within a book”. The fairy-tale plot of this work is characterized by signs of cyclicality. The genre origin of the work is noted, the features of literary fairy tale, fantasy and parable are distinguished. The system of characters of the work is considered, the main characters of which – Westley and Buttercup make a kind of “quest”, passing through various tests, finding each other and faithful friends in the person of Iñigo and Fezzik.
