Abstract

Male and female artistic gymnastics (AG) is one of the sports that has witnessed significant and rapid expansion in the last four decades, with performers reaching top levels at younger ages. AG is, many sports all in one, with slight differences between males and females. Females compete in four events: vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercises. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) is the international governing body for all related gymnastics activities. The FIG reviews and updates the code of judging every 4 years; hence, performance demands on gymnasts are continually changing to meet the new code requirements. One factor to consider when assessing physical and physiological abilities of artistic gymnasts is the fact that they significantly use their upper body in their routines.
