Abstract

Arthur Smith Woodward was born at Macclesfield on 23 May 1864. His father Edward Woodward, his grandfather John Woodward and his great grandfather Ralph Woodward were all silk manufacturers as were the father and grandfather of his mother Margaret Smith. His boyhood was spent in an intellectual atmosphere which had much to do in determining his future career. His father, before being taken into his Uncle William Barnett’s dye works, had studied chemistry with considerable success, and, in addition, was interested in photography and music. Joining with several friends of kindred interests he founded a local scientific society whose evenings were passed with magic lantern and microscope.
