Abstract

Editor's comments: It has been the custom o f Arthroscopy to publish the speeches by presidents and presidential guest speakers without revision. The custom has been followed in these two addresses presented by Dr. Schonholtz, President o f AANA, and Dr. Ikeuchi, his guest speaker, at the Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. in March, 1988. An item of historical interest is mentioned in Dr. lkeuchi's article o f his visit with Dr. Michael Burman in New York in 1959. At that time, he complained that no one in his hospital seemed to have any interest in arthroscopy, and certainly, Dr. Burman himself had only a passive interest in this subject in which he had pioneered in the early 1930s (Burman MS. Arthroscopy. J Bone Joint Surg 1931;13A:669-95). In May, 1976, Dr. Robert Jackson and I participated in a tribute to Dr. Michael Burman at the Hospital For Joint Diseases in New York. Unfortunately, he died a f ew months before this long delayed day of recognition.
