Abstract

The Thirty-sixth Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons will be held at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center on January 31–February 2, 2000, preceded by the Thirty-third Postgraduate Program on Sunday, January 30. The meeting is open to all duly qualified physicians. Both members and nonmembers are urged to register in advance. The Program Committee is very pleased with the response to the abstract call, counting 700 abstracts submitted, which represents an all-time high number of submissions. In addition to the quantity, the high quality of the abstracts made possible the development of a program that represents all aspects of adult and pediatric cardiac surgery and general thoracic surgery. The utilization of breakout sessions continued to be very successful at the last Annual Meeting. On Monday afternoon, there will be parallel Surgical Forums entitled “Research I,” “Research II,” and “General Thoracic Research” running simultaneously from 1:30 to 2:45.On Tuesday afternoon, all parallel Scientific Sessions will run from 1:30 to 5:00. Session I will include “General Thoracic I” followed by “General Thoracic II” segments. Session II will include “Ischemic Heart Disease and Great Vessels” and “Congenital,” and Session III comprises “Adult Cardiac I” and “Adult Cardiac II and Transplantation” segments. The popular breakfast sessions will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. On Tuesday, the Clinical Workshops will be offered. Wednesday morning, Meet the Experts Sessions and Technical Sessions—How I Do It will be held. This year, there will be four symposia presented on Sunday to Tuesday. On Sunday evening there will be an International Symposium presented in Spanish and Portugese which will be chaired by Dr Thomas A. Salerno. On Monday afternoon “Women in Thoracic Surgery” by Dr Rosalyn P. Scott and “Medico-Legal” chaired by Dr Joseph J. Amato will be offered, while on Tuesday morning “Public Affairs Update” chaired by Dr Timothy J. Gardner will be presented. You must preregister for these programs. The Committee had an increase in the number of videotapes submitted for the Annual Movie Night, making it possible to develop an excellent program representative of all aspects of the specialty. The movie night session will be in the Convention Center on Monday evening. This year the poster session will feature presentations on general thoracic and cardiovascular subjects and will include moderated presentations on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. The posters will be on display through Tuesday in the exhibit area, but will be relocated to the meeting room for their presentations on Tuesday or Wednesday morning.Registration and feesAn advance registration form with hotel reservation information and details regarding spouses’ activities will be mailed to Society members. Nonmembers may write to the Secretary, Peter C. Pairolero, MD, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, 401 N Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60611. Also, complete meeting information is available on The Society’s Web site located at http://www.sts.org.Members are not required to pay a registration fee for the Scientific Program. Residents and fellows may register without payment of a registration fee on presentation of a letter from their chief of service. EACTS members registration fee is $175. The fee for other physicians is $250, except guest speakers, authors, coauthors, and invited discussants. Nurses and paramedical personnel may register on payment of $90 fee and presentation of a letter of introduction from a Society member. The Postgraduate Program is sponsored by the Committee on Postgraduate Education of The Society. Registration fee, which includes lunch, for the Postgraduate Program is a $120 for all physicians, residents, and fellows. There will be no mail-in registration for the Clinical Workshops on Tuesday, February 1, or the concurrent Meet the Experts Sessions or Technical Sessions—How I Do It on Wednesday, February 2. Attendance will be by ticket only, and each seminar is limited to 40 physicians. Tickets can be purchased at the Society’s registration desk beginning Saturday, January 29 at 1:30 pm. A continental breakfast is included.Presentation and publicationPapers presented at the Scientific Session must be submitted to the Secretary at the time of presentation or may be submitted to the Editor prior to the meeting for possible earlier publication. If manuscripts are not submitted to the Secretary or Editor prior to or at the time of the Annual Meeting, a 2-year period of ineligibility for participation in the Annual Meeting will be imposed upon all authors of the paper. The same 2-year sanction applies to meeting papers returned to authors for revisions that are not resubmitted within one calendar year.Speakers for the Scientific Sessions should limit their presentations to 10 minutes, except for the Monday afternoon Forum Sessions, where all presentations will be 7 minutes. They are requested to meet with the projectionist in the preview room prior to the opening of their session to prepare their slides for presentation. Poster presenters are asked to summarize their exhibit in 2 minutes. No slides will be used as the posters will be broadcast to the attendees. Those who wish to discuss a paper or poster may write the Secretary prior to the meeting. Discussants from the floor should submit their names to the Moderator at the podium prior to the opening of the session during which the paper is to be presented. Discussants from the floor are limited to 2 minutes; primary discussants are limited to 3 minutes.Discussants will receive a copy of their remarks shortly after the Annual Meeting. Any delay in the return of the corrected discussion to the Editor will hold up publication of the paper. Timely response of all authors and discussants is, therefore, urged because delays are unfair to those who promptly return their material for publication.AccreditationThe Society of Thoracic Surgeons is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. One credit hour in Category I of the Physician’s Recognition Award of the American Medical Association may be claimed for each hour of participation by the individual physician.Thirty-third postgraduate programJanuary 30, 2000 (Sunday)Morning session 7:45–12:007:45 Welcome and IntroductionMichael J.
