Abstract

Arthrography of the thumb metacarpal phalangeal joint is useful in defining the anatomy of ulnar collateral ligament ruptures. When the proximal end of the ligament is turned back, operative treatment is indicated. Approximately ¼ to ½ cc of contrast is instilled into the joint and radiographs taken. In the complete sprain, the outline of the torn ligament can be seen proximal to the joint.
