Abstract

Well documented case studies in art therapy are useful in promoting fuller understanding of its effects in psychiatric treatment. Some inherent features of art therapy lend particular validity to this approach. The efforts of the patient result in some type of art form which potentially forms the basis for an evaluation and analysis by the patient himself of his own work and achievements. Also the objects produced in the session survive in time; both patient and therapist are therefore able to refer back to previous work as an index of and comparison between past and present mental state. By describing the development through various stages, this individual case report demonstrates some therapeutic effects of painting both as a means of monitoring and facilitating progress. The case is presented with a set of self-rating questionnaires and a series of human figure drawings to show this process more clearly.
