Abstract
Art both creates and reveals its historical period. This we can see if we glance back over the Paleolithic paintings in the caves of Lascaux, the Egyptian pyramids, the Greek Parthenon, the Roman Colosseum and Pantheon. So it is in the medieval period, with its cathedrals, its stained glass, its sculpture, paintings, and music. So too in the Baroque period; and so on, through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with their beaux-arts and Bauhaus architecture, and the great variety in this period of painting and musical forms of expression.
