Abstract

Founded at Harvard University by Robert Brustein in 1980 and more recently led by artistic director Diana Paulus, the American Repertory Theatre has developed new musicals such as Big River (1984) and Finding Neverland (2014) and has reimagined classic Broadway musicals such as Porgy and Bess (2011) and Pippin (2012). By reshaping musical theatre writing (sometimes controversially) and succeeding on Broadway, ART’s productions demonstrate how creative innovation can succeed in a commercial marketplace.
