Abstract

Art education in Italy, as in other countries, varies in quality and style. Some teachers use highly creative, modern approaches, while others continue with traditional, rather formal methods. The following article discusses young children's self-expression in art and the educator's role in stimulating these impulses with sensitivity and respect for the child's individuality. Of special interest is the critical assessment of Montessori's theories and practices in art education.
