Abstract

The expression, the Performing Arts, is a suitable definition of today's swinging culture. It is a regrettable definition in light of the extraordinary amount of vigor, vitality and idealism made homeless and aimless by the absence of intellectual discipline and purpose. Even the recent critical evaluation of aid for the arts, by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, was hard put to draw a sharp, clear line between amateur activity and professional standards. The report did not directly handle the matter of “thriving amateurism”, “well-wishing volunteers”, or “the dilettante mentality”. However, the answer is not necessarily to be found in an expanded patronage base, changes in juke box copyright laws, or the abolition of the 10% tax on theatre tickets.
