Abstract

This paper will focus on the cognitive and social functions of art and the role that art plays in communicating social and personal values. It will also show how art criticism, as a discipline, can play an important part in the education of the general and the art student by fostering critical thinking that is related to art history, art production, and aesthetics. Finally, the question of how this critical thinking can function across the curriculum as well as outside the classroom will be addressed.
