Abstract
Abstract This well unified collection of essays, first published in Mexico in 1965, develops basic concepts for a Marxist aesthetic theory. Sanchez-Vasquez places his work within the increasing contemporary emphasis on the “humanist character” of Marxism, opposing “Stalinist deformations” in Marxist theory and in socialism (5). The theory is centered on a dialectical theory of praxis developed mainly from Marx's early writings; thus the historical impulse to explode reified ideological concepts is at its root. Conceived as a struggle to achieve non-alienated, creative praxis, art expresses real needs for unfettered objectification and a sense of totality both in its production and in its consumption. Since these radical needs are historically mediated, art is always changing.
