Abstract

Art and design pedagogy in the Middle East and North Africa has been greatly affected by both Western and Eastern influences. The countries in this region have gone through similar development stages as those of Egypt, and Egypt itself was influenced by the English system of art and design education. This chapter focus on the stages of development of teaching art and design in the Middle East and North Africa with reference to Western influence and Eastern cultural perspectives. It provides a brief historical overview of the major identifiable stages in connection to social, economic, and political developments in the region. It concludes that there have been major developments and changes – following a similar pattern to those seen in art education internationally – in teaching art and design and in art‐making. Today, art, music, drama, and other creative disciplines have a bright future in this region; this is especially the case for the visual arts, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, and handcrafts.
