Abstract

Modern art and design education systems were introduced to the Middle East by Western countries, including England, France, and Italy. As a Middle Eastern country, Oman was also influenced by the Egyptian system of art and design pedagogy, which had been shaped by English methods of teaching art. The impact of this can be seen throughout the Omani art education system, from early childhood to higher education. This chapter focuses on art education in Oman in a broad sense, discussing the issues related to the pedagogical aspects of art and design. It discusses the reform of art education with reference to the new national art and design curriculum. It also sets out the historical background of art and design in higher education in Oman, with a particular focus on the development of the institutions involved in training art and design teachers in Oman.
