Abstract
This study will focus on an unedited and little-known Latin version of Aristophanes’ Plutus, which is preserved in the manuscript Matrit. gr. 4697 at the National Library of Spain. It is a paper codex, which dates back to the last quarter of the 15th century and was copied by the Italian humanist Lodovico da Poppi. The Greek text of the Plutus is accompanied by an interlinear translation into Latin, almost unknown until now. This hitherto neglected codex is especially interesting because of the Latin version it contains, since it appears to be amongst the first ever made of Aristophanes’ Plutus. In this chapter, I will examine and discuss the various translational strategies employed by Lodovico to move Aristophanes’ 4th-century Greek text to a 15th-century Latin-reading community. The analysis ultimately sheds light on the history of the transmission of Aristophanes’ text and the scholarly activities around during this period.
