Abstract

Adaptive transmission that changes the data rate based on the instantaneous channel state can improve the throughput of wireless networks. Throughput performance and area spectral efficiency of wireless multihop networks with adaptive transmission in Rayleigh fading channels are investigated. The numerical results show that both the throughput performance and area spectral efficiency of multihop networks are significantly improved in interference-limited environments. For high end-to-end CNR, multihop networks also offer a significant improvement of these performance when the CNR at each hop is reduced and/or when the channels are reused. The impact of terminal density on the performance of multihop networks is also investigated. The result shows that there is the optimal number of hops for the number of terminals between the source and the destination terminals.
