Abstract

I sympathize with, but do not applaud Prof H S Lipson and Prof A C Rose– Innes who 'suggest that the normal length of the PhD thesis should be about 50 pages' (Physics Bulletin September 1971 p527). The suggestion rests upon a false sense of priorities; the training of the student in scientific writing should surely be the first aim of the requirement of a thesis; the needs of the external examiner must come a very poor second.
