Abstract
Improving driving comfort and reducing fuel consumption are competing targets in the development process of a car. This conflict can be solved by using Siemens VDO’s Integrated Powertrain Management (IPM) to optimise the interaction between the internal combustion engine, an electric motor (e.g. Integrated Starter Generator) and automatic or automated manual transmission. This article shows how additional functions, implemented in software, can increase the value of a vehicle. The open architecture enables the flexible integration of customer-specific solutions, and allow fuel savings of about 15 % to be achieved.
