Abstract Maryse Condé’s oft-cited biography compares suggestively with the intellectual and ideological development of Antillean postcoloniality. Indeed, Condé’s biography is a story of migration, and her oeuvre the product of the migrant’s ‘oblique gaze’. Born in Guadeloupe in 1937, she left at the age of 16 for Paris.
