Abstract

The purpose of this research was to advance knowledge on the feasibility of creating a Geographical Indication (GI) from the structure of a gastronomic hub. The objectives of this research are to investigate whether the gastronomic pole Novo Rio Antigo, located in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil (BR), has the necessary characteristics to become a GI of Lapa/RJ/BR and analyze the possible advantages of this transformation for the entrepreneurial companies that are part of the current pole. As for the research methodology, a qualitative study was carried out using specialized bibliography related to the Gastronomy Pole, to the Geographical Indication and, in special, to Lapa/RJ/BR. The information was captured and analyzed, allowing the reflection on the effects of the implementation of the Geographical Indication of Lapa/RJ/BR for the local business companies. The results pointed out that the New Rio Antigo gastronomic pole does not yet have the necessary characteristics to become the GI Lapa/RJ/BR, however they have potential if the missing requirements are solved, since, if implemented, it may represent benefits for the local and surrounding business companies.
