Abstract

This letter aims to address the calculation of transient field associated with a horizontal electric dipole (HED) excited by a Gaussian pulse in a three-layered anisotropic medium. Approximate formulas applicable to the far transient fields are derived, and analyzed for the case of a thin dielectric layer (a dielectric slab). The resultant analytical formulas have the merit of offering unique insights about the characteristics of the transient field that includes lateral waves, and trapped surface waves. Furthermore, the transient field is further examined for its propagation characteristics, propagation distance, as well as its dependency on dielectric parameters. Finally, usefulness of the proposed formulas are demonstrated by using a microstrip antenna as an example.
