Abstract

AbstractAn approximate analytical solution is developed to describe solute flow in soil during infiltration and redistribution. For the solution it is assumed that hydrodynamic dispersion is linearly related to the pore water velocity. In order to use the solution it is necessary to estimate the solute penetration depth. Methods of estimating the solute penetration depth are discussed. Solute concentration distributions computed with the approximate analytical solution are compared with those obtained with a numerical model. It is shown that the solution proposed is most useful during the infiltration phase. During the redistribution phase the approximate analytical solution provides a first‐order estimate of the solute distribution with time and depth. Computed chloride distributions compare favorably with chloride concentrations observed by Warrick et al. (1971).
