Abstract

This paper provides an introduction to the role of Formal Description Techniques in the development of an architectural semantics for Open Distributed Processing (ODP). Following a brief overview of ODP and the Reference Model for ODP, an outline of the reasons for developing an architectural semantics is given. The different approaches currently being taken for an ODP architectural semantics are presented. Finally, an ODP infrastructure component - the ODP Trader - is specified using the architectural semantics work, and the advantages gained from the approach are discussed.
