Abstract

Advances in computer technology now allow the use of portable computers at the construction site. Several emerging technologies can be applied to construction. These include hypertext and hypermedia, portable pen‐based computers, and wireless communications. Hypermedia systems can link text, pictures, videos, and sounds. Pen‐based computers will provide a means of making hypermedia reference systems available to construction field personnel. It is recommended that this new computer hardware and software be implemented in four stages. Implementation can start with the development of hypermedia programs on existing personal computers. Intermediate stages will involve the use of portable computers at the construction site to allow hypermedia to be accessed by engineers and inspectors in the field. The final stage of development will be to integrate hypermedia with spreadsheets and database programs, and to provide wireless communications with home‐office computers. Wireless communications will allow upper‐level management to efficiently monitor field activities. Management of construction projects will improve because of the rapid flow of information.
