Abstract

Silicon IMPATT diodes have been utilized as microwave power sources to provide several of the functions required in modern radar and communication systems. In this role, these sources operate at relatively low-power levels in which efficiency is not a prime consideration, and in which they replace functions currently furnished by klystrons, backward wave oscillators, and solid-state multiplier chains. An IMPATT is used as a 35-GHz pump source for a parametric amplifier, and electronically tuned IMPATT oscillators are used as phase-locked transmitter drivers and as exciters for video communication links. The performance data for a particular application are presented for the individual devices as well as a description of the system function.
