Abstract

Knowledge of the mechanisms of regulation of food intake is a key problem of applied stock feeding. With growing animals weight gains are the better the more feed is ingested by the animal, consequently a high feed intake is desired. Under practical conditions, however, this is only valid for a relatively short time-span in the growth of young animals. During the later period of growth an increasing feed intake results in an undesired increase in the proportion of fat in the body gain. Thus the problem for the second part of the growth period can be to restrict the feed uptake. This applies especially for early mature animals, above all for swine.
