Abstract

This paper provides an introduction to the concepts behind both model-based reasoning and qualitative reasoning. The aim is to show how qualitative methods can be used to build powerful model-based reasoning systems. Different classes of models are discussed and a number of approaches to qualitative reasoning are introduced. Some extensions to the basic concepts are considered and the advantages and limitations are identified. The paper then presents a number of applications of qualitative model-based reasoning which have been documented in the literature. Finally some areas of future research are outlined.
