Abstract
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance is one of the few non-invasive techniques for metabolic investigation. Its advantages and the kind of informations it provides are quickly explained. Examples are given of various contributions to the in vivo study of normal or diseased human muscle metabolism, mainly based on phosphorus 31 (31P) studies. The complementarity of informations provided by various nuclei is shown by the evaluation of muscle glycogen levels in myopathies by natural abundance carbon 13 NMR. Biochemical/functional information on exercising muscles can be obtained by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) combined with 31P-NMR, which may have diagnostic and pathophysiological applications. The latter study has raised questions about the amount of perfusion in some muscle diseases which has been answered by a combined 31P-NMR and positron emission tomography (PET) study.
